UK-based LinuxUser
puts Laragh's latest e-learning package to the test
and finds Discovering Linux an "excellent
training package". Below, we publish excerpts from
the review.

Windows users can now satisfy their
curiosity about Linux with a thorough computer-based introduction
aimed directly at them. Spanning
approximately seven hours of self-paced tuition, "Discovering
Linux", the latest release
by custom CBT courseware specialist Laragh covers the
history, distribution, and features of Linux; installing
Linux and running applications; Linux system administration;
and Linux and the Internet.
A clear, even witty presentation of key
concepts and information is achieved through charming,
quality graphics featuring Tux the penguin as the ever-patient
course tutor. The intricacies of the command line, permissions
and the file system are unravelled by Laragh's ever-helpful
penguin.
The scope of subjects covered is somewhat
broader than the CBT products from Caldera and Omnilinux
we looked at last month, including not only the origins
and heritage of Linux, and its installation, but also
a practical introduction to using both command-line and
GUI tools to deal with common setup scenarios and other
everyday requirements.
Anticipatory questions like "Do you think
Linux can run DOS programs?" help to break up the click-through,
and create interest in the subsequent information. Students
can test how effectively they have absorbed information
with a scored test at the end of the course.
One possible disadvantage of this product
compared with comparable offerings is that it only runs
on the Microsoft Windows platform, while Caldera and Omnilinux
went for an HTML-based approach deliverable through a
graphical web browser on any platform. However, 'Discovering
Linux' is pitched squarely at current Windows users who
are interested in, but have yet to try, Linux.
